BluWave-ai Brings Real-Time Energy Optimization into ABB Electrification Startup Challenge, in Collaboration with SynerLeap Accelerator

Ottawa, November 27, 2020

Canadian company is finalist in the challenge with ultimate goal of boosting ABB's future offerings

ABB has launched its Electrification Virtual Startup Challenge 2020 in collaboration with SynerLeap, the ABB global innovation growth hub, and event partner Microsoft. They’ve curated a selection of 15 startups from around the world, include Ottawa, Canada’s BluWave-ai, to participate in ten days of ideation, refinement and development of a real-world solution in one of three categories: Smart Buildings, Smart Power and Distributed Solutions.

BluWave-ai is participating in the Smart Power category. Its challenge involves building a simulator based on real-time and historical data from ABB’s Net Zero headquarters in Bergamo, Italy, as well as from Canadian sites where BluWave-ai is already operational. BluWave-ai will connect its distributed artificial intelligence (AI) platform with the building management system using ABB’s application programming interface.

BluWave-ai’s machine learning will analyze the data to deliver intelligent control of load management and charging. In addition, BluWave-ai will propose battery and large electric vehicle (EV) fleet storage optimization for energy arbitrage at the Bergamo facility.

The proposed solution would enable commercial and industrial customers and EV charging infrastructure customers of ABB and BluWave-ai to converge diverse data from solar generation, wind power, real-time market pricing, variable loads, battery storage, EV chargers, and demand response programs. BluWave-ai’s software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform leverages AI to produce optimal energy decisions, increasing the renewables mix, decreasing the carbon footprint, and saving customers 10-20% in energy costs in the process.

BluWave-ai has filed several patents in intelligent smart grid optimization and intelligent EV charging, bringing this innovation to the ABB collaboration.

Camilla Kullborg, ABB VP, Global Technology Startup Scouting, SynerLeap, comments, “ABB’s innovation growth hub, SynerLeap, helps startups accelerate and expand on the global market. SynerLeap offers mentorship and a unique access to ABB’s networks, clients and technology. BluWave-ai’s strong data-driven technology and sustainability focus secured it a place in the Smart Power category, competing against four other innovative enterprises to secure the winning spot.”

Devashish Paul, CEO and Founder of BluWave-ai, explains, “This multi-faceted deployment of our AI with ABB’s operations highlights the dynamic nature of the patented BluWave-ai solution applied to multiple areas of electrification for intelligent real time analysis, prediction, and optimization of energy use and its carbon footprint.”

The three winning startups will each receive a $30,000 investment and will work in close collaboration with ABB with the ambition to bring their innovative ideas to market and benefit from immediate access to ABB’s global customer base.
